Why AI Will Dismantle the SaaS Business Model

Many businesses today are grappling with a problem called "SaaS sprawl" or "SaaS fat." This happens when a company subscribes to numerous software products, often with overlapping features, and pays for a large number of user seats that are not fully utilized. This is similar to the pre-SaaS era when businesses paid massive fees for on-premise software and maintenance, creating "IT bloat." The current model of charging per-seat encourages companies to overspend on software, leading to a situation where they are only getting a fraction of the value they pay for.AI is a solution to this problem and will put pressure on the SaaS industry. AI's ability to automate tasks, such as handling support tickets or managing data, will make the traditional seat-based business model obsolete. If a business can use an AI to automate the work of 15 support reps, they won't need to pay for 15 seat licenses anymore. This creates a conflict for SaaS companies, as they need to innovate with AI to stay competitive, but doing so could directly threaten their core revenue model. They will be forced to either change their pricing or risk losing customers to new, agile AI-driven solutions.YesAI is not just about automation; it also allows businesses to take back control of their data. A company's most valuable asset is its data and domain knowledge, which currently lives behind a paywall and seat licensing with third-party SaaS providers. AI-generated code and applications, however, will allow businesses to create their own custom solutions. This shift means that instead of being locked into a specific vendor, companies can own and control their AI models and applications, giving them the power to continuously add new features without needing a large, expensive development team.
